CHUCKWAGON RACING
The following pictures were taken at the 2005 Chuckwagon Races at Wild Eye Ranch in the Missouri Ozarks. These images capture a part of history in the making as cowboys and cowgirls careen around the course in authentic buckboards and chuckwagons pulled by amazing teams of world class horses, ponies, and mules. Many of the wagons in the race are original 'Springfield Wagons'.
The folklore of chuckwagon racing suggests that it all began when cowboys, living and working on the range, had completed their chores, and were ready to return to town. When the work was done, all the supplies were pitched into the wagon and the cooks would race to town. Cowboys, known as outriders would team up with their own cook and wagon, and together, all would join in the race. The last team to arrive at the saloon would have to buy a round of drinks for the winners.....and so was born... chuckwagon racing.
