BONAVENTURE CEMETERY, SAVANNAH

Strolling through Bonaventure Cemetery, we are aware that KEZIAH'S history and untimely death at a young age is a characteristic of life as it stretches always to extend beyond its limits and reach for new frontiers. Here in Bonaventure is the story of others who had followed similar paths. One in particular that stands out is the memorial to a young woman who died on the eve of her wedding. The monument that stands as sentry by her grave is a magnificent Italian marble sculpture, and chiseled in stone on its face are the words, "ALLURED by brighter worlds and led the way". The ability of art to reach beyond the world of matter and touch the soul is strongly conveyed in this statue of the young woman with the 'dropped' wedding veil.

And the young girl, GRACIE, who died at age 7, is also buried here. Savannah history informs us that Gracie was loved by all her knew her and mourned her untimely death. Perhaps our heroes, our maidens, our children, who leave us all too soon show us the face of innocence and faith, and encourage us to never stop dreaming, and reaching for meaning that lies just beyond our grasp. Near the Savannah River's edge is a monument depicting Christ standing at "Heaven's Gate", or, as we have named the picture in our Gallery, simply the "PASSAGE", a transitory state leading from Life to LIFE. (These pictures and others are in the Bonaventure Gallery.)
